The Newfield Fire Company was organized at a meeting on January 22, 1908 On February 19, 1908 the following Officers were elected:
Mathias Miller - Chief Frank S. Morrell - Assistant Chief Charles N. Tyler - Foreman William Hartman - Assistant Foreman Michael Dillon - Foreman - Big Ladder Roy Hawn - Second Foreman Big- Ladder Raymond Van Hook - Foreman Bucket Brigade Alden Beckett - Trustee David Van Hook - Trustee Carlos Ober - Trustee
The Members voted that dues would be $.05 per month. The first fire alarm used to alert members of a fire was a wheel from a locomotive that was donated by the Darby Fire Company ,Darby,PA. The first firehouse was a library that was not being used at the time and was donated by the Library Commission. On March 4, 1908 the School Trustees voted the Fire Company could use whatever land they needed. On March 11, 1908 a meeting was held in the first firehouse . At this meeting the Company refused to accept the first shipment of fire buckets because they only held 8 quarts of water instead of 10 quarts as ordered. On March 23, 1908 the company had 25 members. The Newfield Fire Company No. 1 was Incorporated an April 15,1908.the first piece of apparatus was a flat bed wagon with hooks on the side for buckets. In November of 1912 , the company purchased a Model T Ford equipped with 2 soda acid tanks and a ladder. On June 9, 1919 the company held its meeting in a new firehouse. The new firehouse was the old school which later became the Borough Hall. On July 15, 1925 the company purchased its second fire engine. It also was a Model T Ford equipped with 2 soda acid tanks and a ladder. The Company had 38 members at this point. On January 1, 1930 the Fire Chief was appointed Borough Fire Warden , a position that has been held by all succeeding Fire Chiefs. On June 8, 1931 the company purchased its first pumper. It was a 1929 REO equipped with a Northern pump, 500 gallon tank, ladder, hose and accessories. The truck was built by Mr. Sheppard of Bridgeton,NJ . This truck is still owned by the company and is still operational and is driven and shown in parades and events in town. The first fire that the REO went to was the Kendall house on DutchMill Rd. The driver was G.B. Saul.on September 14, 1931 the Newfield Borough Clerk stated the cost of operating the Fire Company was $ 500.00. On December 14, 1931 the 1918 Model T Ford was sold to George McCarthy. In 1941 the company purchased a 1937 Ford, 500 gallon pumper equipped with a front mounted Barton Pump. On October 13, 1952 a contract was awarded to the New Jersey Fire equipment Company for a fully equipped 1953 GMC pumper. Total Price $13,017.68. In 1958 the Company held its first Chicken Barbecue and have been an annual tradition since. On September 18, 1965the Company took delivery of a Fully equipped 1965 GMC pumper. In 1972 the Fire Company moved into a new firehouse on Catawba Ave. and is still our current home. In 1979 the company took delivery of Engine 48-15 a Dodge Power Wagon 4 wheel drive mini- pumper with a 350 gallon per minute pump and a 250 gallon tank and is currently still in service. In 1983 the company took delivery of Engine 48-14 a 1983 Grumann pumper with a 1000 gallon a minute pump and a 1000 gallon tank and is currently still in service. In 1992 the Company took delivery of a 1992 Pierce dash pumper with a 1ooo gallon a minute pump 750 gallon tank and a 40 gallon foam tank and is currently still in service. In 2007 the Company obtained a decommissioned Police vehicle and converted for use as a Command Vehicle it is a 1999 Chevy Tahoe and is currently in service today.
